Using the latest software versions certainly provides many advantages. Firstly, they may provide more and improved features, such as a friendlier interface or new functions. Secondly, they are likely to be more stable, as most of the updates consist of previous bugs fixes. Finally, they are developed to be compatible with newer versions of operating systems. Unfortunately, only some applications already come with the capacity to update themselves, so a tool that can help you keep your software updated is always useful.
Update Detector can check the versions of the applications running on your computer, consult the Internet database and tell you which ones already need updating. Update Detector is very easy to use, as all you will need is a single click on the Scan button for the program to provide you with a report. However, its graphical user interface is not very attractive. In fact, the Customize Results window looks rather disproportionate compared to the rest of the application. Luckily, the tool supports a long list of languages.
Although I suppose that the tool hides as a small icon in the System Tray for some purpose, like checking for updates regularly, I didn’t find a way to schedule such an action. The results can be customized by hiding beta versions or given applications. Unfortunately, the tool seems to only scan for installed applications, as it didn’t include in the report any information about drivers or codecs. more
